EQUILOID. Encephalomyelitis Vaccine. Eastern and western, Killed Virus. Tetanus Toxoid.
INDICATIONS: For vaccination of healthy horses as an aid in the prevention of Eastern and Western equine encephalomyelitis and tetanus.
COMPOSITION: The encephalomyelitis fractions are prepared from virus grown on a stable cell line substrate infected with Eastern and Western types encephalomyelitis virus. The viruses have been formalin inactivated and combined to provide optimum immunizing efficacy against both types. The MetaStim™ adjuvant is added to enhance the immune response and to promote the proper rate of vaccine absorption following inoculation. The tetanus toxoid fraction is refined and concentrated by a unique process which eliminates at least 97 percent of the non-specific nitrogen but leaves the antigenic fraction unchanged. Highly purified toxoids are desirable since components responsible for producing allergic or side reactions are practically eliminated.
ADMINISTRATION AND DOSAGE: Horses, inject one 1 mL dose intramuscularly using aseptic technique. Administer a second 1 mL dose 4 to 8 weeks after the first dose. Revaccinate annually using one 1 mL dose. To insure proper placement and retention of the vaccine, inject deep into the heavy muscles of the hindquarter. Mild exercise to promote absorption is recommended for one week after injection. Protective tetanus antibody titers usually occur two weeks after the second injection of the initial series. In the event of injury during the course of the initial vaccination program, or if annual boosters have not been given, a prophylactic dose of at least 1500 units of tetanus antitoxin should be given.
CAUTION: Store in the dark at 2 to 7 degrees C (35 to 45 degrees F). Avoid freezing. Shake well. When used according to instructions, it is unusual for reactions to appear, other than those expected with any vaccination of horses; for example, occasional temporary local swelling. Do not vaccinate within 60 days before slaughter. In case of anaphylactoid reaction, administer epinephrine. Thimerosal, neomycin, polymyxin B and amphotericin B added as preservatives. For veterinary use only.
