Thiamin (Vitamin B-1) plays an important role in nerve transmission and excitation. Thiamin is also believed to stimulate appetite and assist in the prevention of tying up and regulate nerve function. There does not seem to be any fear of toxicity in horses with thiamin and it is not stored in fatty tissues for later use. Pyridoxine (Vitamin B-6) is an important synergist in the synthesis of amino acids like tryptophan. Although, no dietary requirements for pyridoxine have been established for the horse, deficiencies in other species include reduced growth rate, muscular weakness, anemia, impaired immune function and neurological abnormalities resembling epilepsy.
