FLY INFORMATION: A single fly can carry millions of disease-causing organisms that can cause serious health problems for poultry, swine, beef, and diary cattle and costly financial problems for producers. The common housefly (musca domestical) and the little housefly (fannoa canicilaris will lay their eggs in clusters of 75-150 eggs in moist, rotting organic matter such as animal manure, accumulated grass clippings, spilled feed and soil contaminated by any of the before mentioned. Females can lay 500 eggs in a lifetime. The eggs hatch within a day, and the larvae burrow into loose ground to pupate and complete their development. This takes place in three days to several weeks depending on temperature and the availability of food before flies emerge as adults. In ideal conditions, flies can complete their entire life cycle in less than seven days. COMMON FLIES: Approximately 1/8 to 1/4 inch long and dull gray with four dark stripes on the back of the thorax. Two wings, large red-brown compound eyes surrounded by light gold stripe, with short antennae between the eyes, Migrate up to 20 miles away, but most stay within one-two miles of breeding site. Foods range from excrement to human food. Flies rest less than five feet above ground in the day, and higher at night. Can carry millions of disease-causing organisms. Can contaminate animal feed. Flies can stress animals, which can reduce production and inhibit weight gain. Preferred sites of infestation: houses, barns, poultry houses, stables and feedyards.
