Copan (CH-ATK) is a ready to use qualitative test that detects a broad spectrum of antibiotics in milk. It contains spores of Bacillus stearothermophilus var. calidolactis, selected due to their high sensitivity to beta-lactams, tetracyclines and sulfonamides. The Bacillus spores are trapped in an agar based gel matrix containing nutritive substances and a pH indicator. After inoculation with milk and incubation at 64 degrees C for three hours, the gel in the test vial will become yellow if the antibiotic concentration in the milk sample is below the values indicated in the sensitivity table. Otherwise the color of the gel in the test vial will remain purple, indicating that a level of an antimicrobial substance is detected above the minimum sensitivity level of the test.
