PRODUCT CODE AND NAME: Calf-Guard; 80489, 10368
DESCRIPTION: Calf-Guard contains modified live virus strains of bovine rotavirus and bovine coronavirus propagated on established cell lines and freeze-dried to preserve stability. Baccine is rehydrated with sterile diluent for oral vaccination of calves in a single dose, or intramuscular (IM) vaccination of cows in 2 doses given 3-6 weeks apart during late pregnancy.
ADVANTAGES: Oral vaccination of newborn calves stimulates rapid, active immunity against rota- and coronavirus diarrhea, two of the most prevalent forms of viral scours. IM vaccination of pregnant cows stimulates immunity, which is transferred to nursing calves via colostrums and milk. Proven effective in extensive clinical trials. Field studies in 21 herds showed that incidence of scours was 25.7% in 1,598 vaccinated calves versus 47.8% in 1,035 nonvaccinated calves. Death loss from scours was 2.9% in vaccinated calves and 19.0% in nonvaccinated calves. In 2,927 calves from nonvaccinated cows developed sours, and death loss was 4.1%. These results indicate that vaccination with Calf-Guard significantly reduces incidence and death loss from neonatal calf diarrhea. Experimental calves remained normal following oral administration of Calf-Guard, and adverse reactions were not reported. Early vaccination can minimize contamination of premises, reducing spread of viral scours.
DIRECTIONS: General Directions: Vaccination of healthy newborn calves or pregnant cows is recommended. Asepticall rehydrate the freeze-dried vaccine with the terile diluent provided, shake well and administer 3 mL without delay.Calf Vaccination: Remove needle from syringe and administer a single 3 mL dose into the back of the calf's mouth. Vaccination should occur as soon as possible after birth because susceptible calves are at risk as soon as they are born. Oral vaccination of calves should occur prior to ingestion of colostrum to avoid neutralization of the Calf-Guard MLV agent. Vaccinations of calves older than 1 day may not be effective.Cow Vaccination: Healthy cows should receive 2 IM doses administered 3-6 weeks apart during late pregnancy. Ideally, the second dose should be administered within 30 days prior to calving. In accordance with Beef Quality Assurance guidelines, this product should be administered in the muscular region of the neck.Cow Revaccination: Cows should be revaccinated with 2 doses during each subsequent pregnancy.
